FAQ's
Who needs to take OSHA 24-Hour HAZWOPER?
The 24-hour training is primarily intended for individuals who are new to uncontrolled hazardous waste or emergency response operations but will be minimally exposed to it.
What does the training consist of?
The training includes dynamic content and practice quizzes throughout to help students reinforce what they learned in each topic. The final exam is multiple choice and includes three (3) exam attempts. Students must score 70% or higher to receive a certificate of completion.
What are the requirements to be considered “certified”?
The requirements to fulfill training requirements include:
- Before entering the job site, individuals must complete the formal online training class that meets OSHA 1910.178 standards.
- They must pass the final exam with a score of 70% or better.
- They must present the certificate of completion to a future or current employer for approval
- The General Site Worker must also receive at least three days of actual field experience under a supervisor. This is the responsibility of the student’s employer or potential employer.
This course satisfies all of the training standards identified by the Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA), and provides the written documentation needed to provide to an employer.
Can I register now, but take the training later?
Yes, you can complete the training at your own pace. Once you start the course, you have 90 days to complete the training and final exam. Furthermore, you have three (3) attempts to pass the final exam.
What is the difference between the 40-hour and 24-hour course?
If you have never taken a HAZWOPER training course before, then you will have to either take the 24-hour or 40-hour training.
The 40-Hour training (most common) is for workers who will:
- Potentially exposed to hazardous materials regularly on their job site.
- Potentially be exposed to these materials at or above permissible exposure limits (PELs)
- Be using PPE equipment for more than 30 days per year
- Supervise individuals who will be doing any of the above.
The 24-Hour training is for workers who will:
- Potentially exposed to hazardous materials occasionally on their job site.
- Potentially be exposed to these materials below permissible exposure limits (PELs)
- Be using PPE equipment, for less than than 30 days per year
- Supervise individuals who will doing any of the above, but not employees who need the 40-hour course
If you are still having trouble deciding which course you need, many individuals opt to take the 40-hour course just to be safe. It is also recommended that you ask your manager or supervisor which course they want you to get.
How long is a certificate good for?
The 24-hour training certificate is valid for 1 year. After that, renew by taking the 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher training.
